The FAME Studios Pilgrimage: Where to Stay, What to See, and What Everyone Misses

Top 10 Best FAME Studios Muscle Shoals Where to Stay (2026) - vlb

You came for the music history. You’ll come back for the river, the food, and the pace of a place that hasn’t been ruined yet.

Here’s what happens to almost every music tourist who visits Muscle Shoals, Alabama:

They drive in from Nashville or Birmingham. They spend two hours at FAME Recording Studios on Avalon Avenue, standing in the same room where Aretha Franklin recorded “I Never Loved a Man” and where the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section created some of the most recognizable sounds in American music history. They walk through Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on Jackson Highway, where the Stones and Dylan and Lynyrd Skynyrd laid down tracks. They take their photos. They buy a t-shirt.

And then they drive home.

They never set foot on the Tennessee River. They never eat at Odette, or find the fried catfish at George’s Steak Pit in Sheffield, or walk the brick streets of downtown Florence. They never see a sunset from Wilson Lake that turns the water copper and gold while a great blue heron coasts over the dam.

They get the Wikipedia version of Muscle Shoals and miss the actual place entirely.

I run waterfront rentals on Wilson Lake, fifteen minutes from FAME Studios. And the thing I’ve learned from hosting music pilgrims for years is this: the studios are the reason you come, but the Shoals area is the reason you stay.

Here’s how to do it right.

Day 1: The Music History Deep Dive

Morning: FAME Recording Studios 3614 Jackson Highway — wait, no. That’s the other one. FAME is at 603 Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals. (Everyone gets them confused. The mailing address for Muscle Shoals Sound Studio is 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield.)

Book the tour in advance. FAME still operates as a working recording studio, so tour times depend on session schedules. The studio tour runs about 60-90 minutes and costs around $15-20 per person. Rick Hall built this place in 1959. Aretha. Etta James. Wilson Pickett. Duane Allman. Otis Redding. The list is absurd for a small concrete building on a two-lane road in a town of 15,000 people.

What the tour won’t tell you (because you have to feel it): there’s a reason these artists came HERE instead of going to New York or Los Angeles. The Shoals had something the big cities didn’t — a specific, unhurried creative energy that came from the place itself. The musicians who worked here talked about it. That energy is still here. You just have to slow down enough to notice it.

Afternoon: Muscle Shoals Sound Studio 3614 Jackson Highway, Sheffield. This is the studio the Swampers built after splitting from FAME in 1969. The Rolling Stones recorded “Wild Horses” and “Brown Sugar” here. Bob Dylan. Paul Simon. Rod Stewart. The building has been restored and the tour is worth every minute.

Evening: Dinner at Odette 120 N. Court Street, Florence. This is the restaurant that put the Shoals on the food map. James Beard-nominated. Southern food that takes its roots seriously but doesn’t stay stuck in 1965. The menu changes, but the wood-fired proteins and the seasonal vegetable plates are consistently excellent. Make a reservation — this isn’t a walk-in situation on weekends.

Alternative dinner: If Odette’s booked, Stanfield’s in downtown Florence does elevated Southern comfort food with a killer bourbon list. Or for something more casual, Big Bad Breakfast (from the John Currence empire) does exactly what it sounds like.

Day 2: On the Water

Morning: Wilson Lake

This is the day most music tourists miss entirely. And it’s the best day of the trip.

Wilson Lake is a 15,930-acre reservoir on the Tennessee River, created by Wilson Dam — which, when it was completed in 1924, was the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. The lake sits between Muscle Shoals and Florence, and the waterfront is spectacularly underdeveloped compared to lakes in Tennessee, Georgia, or the Carolinas.

From our Wilson Lake property — a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom waterfront house — you can launch kayaks from the private dock, fish for bass and crappie, or just sit on the deck with coffee and watch the herons work the shallows.

If you want to get on the water, Muscle Shoals has pontoon and kayak rental outfitters that can set you up for a half-day or full day. A lazy pontoon cruise on Wilson Lake with a cooler and a Bluetooth speaker is the antidote to everything wrong with modern tourism.

Afternoon: Wilson Dam and the Renaissance Tower

Drive across Wilson Dam. It’s free, it’s scenic, and the engineering is genuinely impressive. On the Florence side, the Renaissance Tower (attached to the Marriott Shoals) has the best aerial view of the Tennessee River valley. You can see Wilson Lake, the dam, the Singing River, and the reason this area mattered long before the music industry found it.

Evening: The Dock

Come back to the property. Grill something. Open a bottle. Sit on the dock. Watch the sun set over Wilson Lake. This is the part of the Shoals trip that nobody posts on Instagram but everyone remembers.

Day 3: Florence, Sheffield, and the Unexpected Stuff

Morning: Downtown Florence

Florence has the most walkable downtown in the Shoals. Start at Court Street and work your way around. There’s a genuine independent bookshop (Billy Reid’s flagship is here too, if you’re into Southern-designed menswear). The Renaissance Faire in late October is surprisingly legit. The W.C. Handy Home and Museum — the Father of the Blues was born here — is a small but meaningful stop.

Lunch: George’s Steak Pit, Sheffield

I’m going to say something that might start an argument: George’s Steak Pit has the best fried catfish in North Alabama. It’s been open since 1956. The steaks are good. The catfish is transcendent. The atmosphere is old-school, no-nonsense, and exactly what you want.

Afternoon: Rattlesnake Saloon or the Natchez Trace

If you want one more adventure: the Rattlesnake Saloon in Tuscumbia is a restaurant built inside a rock shelter under a natural rock overhang. You ride a truck down into a ravine to get there. It’s bizarre and wonderful and the burgers are solid.

Or drive a section of the Natchez Trace Parkway, which passes through the Shoals area. No billboards, no commercial traffic, no stoplights for 444 miles. Even a 30-minute stretch resets your brain.

Why Wilson Lake Beats a Florence Hotel

Here’s the honest comparison:

A hotel room in Florence runs $120-180/night. You get a room, a parking lot view, a lobby coffee machine, and a 15-minute drive to anywhere interesting.

Our Wilson Lake property is a 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom waterfront house with a private dock, kayaks, a full kitchen, BBQ, and sunsets that aren’t available at any hotel at any price. It sleeps 6 comfortably. Split between two or three couples, your per-person cost drops below what you’d pay for that hotel room.

And you’re 15 minutes from FAME. 20 minutes from downtown Florence. 10 minutes from Wilson Dam. But when you come home at the end of the day, you’re coming home to the water — not a hallway and an ice machine.

That’s the difference between visiting the Shoals and experiencing them.

The Thing Nobody Tells You About Muscle Shoals

The music history is real and it matters. But the Shoals area is in this specific window right now where it’s been discovered enough to have great restaurants and restored studios and cultural momentum, but it hasn’t been overrun yet. There’s no strip of chain restaurants on the main drag. There’s no $30 parking lot near the studios. The locals still wave at you from their trucks.

That window won’t last forever. Places like this never stay secret. Nashville was this 20 years ago. Asheville was this 15 years ago.

Come now. See the studios. Stay on the water. Eat the catfish. Slow down.
