Planning a summer stay at our Elk River vacation rental in Athens, Alabama? Downtown Athens and Limestone County run a full calendar of free, family-friendly events from late spring through the end of summer. Below are the 2026 dates as published by the organizers. Those dates have now passed, but most of these events come back every year, and 2027 dates are typically announced in early spring, so check the linked sources before you plan a trip around a specific night.
1. Merchants Alley Happy Hour Music Series (spring and fall Fridays)
Athens Main Street hosts free live music every Friday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Merchants Alley, the alleyway at 107 N. Jefferson Street in downtown Athens, with a different local or regional act each week. In 2026 the spring series ran April 24 through June 26 and the fall series runs September 4 through October 30. Bring a lawn chair, grab dinner or a drink from a downtown restaurant (the downtown entertainment district allows drinks in official cups), and make an evening of it. 2. Fridays After Five at the Courthouse Square
On select Fridays, the party moves to the east side of the Limestone County Courthouse for Fridays After Five, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., with a headline band, food trucks, a kids zone and extended downtown shopping hours. The 2026 concerts were April 24 (Juice), May 29 (Maclin & Co), June 26 (Matt Prater Band) and July 31 (Velcro Pygmies). On the nights that overlap with Merchants Alley, you can catch music in the alley first and then walk to the square. Admission is free. Source: Athens Main Street, Mar. 17, 2026.
3. Alabama Free Fishing Day (a Saturday in June)
Each year the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources picks one Saturday in June when residents and out-of-state visitors can fish public waters statewide without a fishing license. In 2026 it was Saturday, June 13. It’s a good day to try the Elk River if your group doesn’t have licenses yet. State Public Fishing Lakes still require a permit, private ponds need the owner’s permission, and some piers charge fees. Licenses are required again the rest of the year. 4. Athens Farmers Market at Doug Gates Park
Limestone County’s state-certified farmers market sets up at 409 W. Green Street. In 2026 it ran Tuesdays from May 5 to August 25 (3 to 6 p.m.) and Saturdays from June 6 to September 26 (8 a.m. to noon). It’s an easy stop for produce and baked goods to stock the cabin kitchen.
